MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) Empty Deep-Sea Fishes: Biology, Diversity, Ecology and Fisheries

Dom Ago 12, 2018 2:36 pm
MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) 51AScSrSGTL._SX377_BO1,204,203,200_

The technological advances of the last twenty years have brought huge advances in our understanding of the deep sea and of the species inhabiting this elusive and fascinating environment. Synthesising the very latest research and discoveries, this is a comprehensive and much-needed account of deep-sea fishes. Priede examines all aspects of this incredibly diverse group of animals, reviewing almost 3,500 species and covering deep-sea fish evolution, physiology and ecology as well as charting the history of their discovery from the eighteenth century to the present day. Providing a global account of both pelagic and demersal species, the book ultimately considers the effect of the growing deep-sea fishing industry on sustainability. Copiously illustrated with explanations of the deep-sea environment, drawings of fishes and information on how they adapt to the deep, this is an essential resource for biologists, conservationists, fishery managers and anyone interested in marine evolution and natural history.

MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) Empty Angelfishes for Marine Aquariums: Diversity, Selection & Care

Dom Ago 12, 2018 2:38 pm
MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) 51CdU223jML

Amongst all families of marine fishes, the Angelfishes rank supreme for splashy color, markings and interesting behavior. Do you think that fishes are intelligent? I believe some like the Angels are; knowing of their own existence, remembering their territories, and at least some forming pair bonds and haremic associations; apparently for life.
For saltwater aquarists, marine Angels span the breadth of “usability”; with some being small enough to be placed in nano-reefs, to others requiring systems of a few hundred gallons as adults. There are Pomacanthid species with more specialized nutrition needs; ones that feed mostly on sponges in the wild; others are more generalized planktivores, the majority omnivorous period. Similarly, some species are “hard as nails” given appropriate aquarium care, while other Angel species historically have historically fared very poorly in captivity.

MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) Empty Surgeonfishes: Tangs for Marine Aquariums: Diversity, Selection & Care

Dom Ago 12, 2018 2:42 pm
MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) 511QMQQLy3L

Whatever common name applied to these razor-wielding fishes, the Surgeons, Tangs or Doctorfishes span the entire bandwidth of aquarium suitability. A few ship so poorly they rarely recover from the rigors of capture and transport from the wild. Then there are the members of the family that should be disqualified on the basis of growing too large (quite a few to more than a foot and a half in length), and/or outright agonistic behavior... The majority, though tough as proverbial "nails", must still be qualified as through careful individual selection on the basis of apparent condition and proven feeding.
Not to worry, here we'll sort out which are suitable for aquarium use.

MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) Empty The Ecology of Marine Fishes: California and Adjacent Waters

Dom Ago 12, 2018 2:49 pm
MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) 51BNog1l-lL._SX384_BO1,204,203,200_

Marine fishes have been intensively studied, and some of the fundamental ideas in the science of marine ecology have emerged from the body of knowledge derived from this diverse group of organisms. This unique, authoritative, and accessible reference, compiled by 35 luminary ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and ichthyologists, provides a synthesis and interpretation of the large, often daunting, body of information on the ecology of marine fishes. The focus is on the fauna of the eastern Pacific, especially the fishes of the California coast, a group among the most diverse and best studied of all marine ecosystems. A generously illustrated and comprehensive source of information, this volume will also be an important launching pad for future research and will shed new light on the study of marine fish ecology worldwide.

The contributors touch on many fields in biology, including physiology, development, genetics, behavior, ecology, and evolution. The book includes sections on the history of research, both published and unpublished data, sections on collecting techniques, and references to important earlier studies.

MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) Empty Migration Ecology of Marine Fishes

Dom Ago 12, 2018 2:50 pm
MARINE FISH - BOOKS (excluding sharks and stingrays) 41dortjbEzL._SX349_BO1,204,203,200_

Not since F. R. Harden Jones published his masterwork on fish migration in 1968 has a book so thoroughly demystified the subject. With stunning clarity, David Hallock Secor’s Migration Ecology of Fishes finally penetrates the clandestine nature of marine fish migration.

Secor explains how the four decades of research since Jones’s classic have employed digital-age technologies―including electronic miniaturization, computing, microchemistry, ocean observing systems, and telecommunications―that render overt the previously hidden migration behaviors of fish. Emerging from the millions of observed, telemetered, simulated, and chemically traced movement paths is an appreciation of the individual fish. Members of the same populations may stay put, explore, delay, accelerate, evacuate, and change course as they conditionally respond to their marine existence. But rather than a morass of individual behaviors, Secor shows us that populations are collectively organized through partial migration, which causes groups of individuals to embark on very different migration pathways despite being members of the same population.

Case studies throughout the book emphasize how migration ecology confounds current fisheries management. Yet, as Secor explains, conservation frameworks that explicitly consider the influence of migration on yield, stability, and resilience outcomes have the potential to transform fisheries management. A synthetic treatment of all marine fish taxa (teleosts and elasmobranchs), this book employs explanatory frameworks from avian and systems ecology while arguing that migrations are emergent phenomena, structured through schooling, phenotypic plasticity, and other collective agencies.

The book provides overviews of the following concepts:
• The comparative movement ecology of fishes and birds
• The alignment of mating systems with larval dispersal
• Schooling and migration as adaptations to marine food webs
• Natal homing
• Connectivity in populations and metapopulations
• The contribution of migration ecology to population resilience
